Texas shooting sparks concern over gun violence

On May 24, an 18-year-old gunman killed 19 children and two adults in Uvalde, Texas. There have now been a total of 231 mass shootings that have occurred since January. The Union staff spoke with students and faculty around campus to get their insight on the tragic event. Read more.
Students and faculty request a Chicano/Latino Center on campus

Five students and four faculty members made a public request for a designated space on campus for Chicano/Latino students. The proposed Chicano/Latino Center is meant to be a social hub dedicated to embracing the vast cultural identities of Latino students and providing academic support tailored to their needs. El Camino’s land has ties to historic Black-owned property

The land the El Camino College resides on used to house Gordon Manor - a plot of land intended to be reserved for about a thousand Black residents. The manor was destroyed and eventually became Alondra Park, a Golf Course along with El Camino College in the late 1940s. Read more.
Police Beat May 16 - May 24

There has been a total of 11 reported crimes since the last Police Beat update was published on May 19. Nine out of the total 11 reported cases took place in 2021 and were outsourced to the LAPD due to their locations being based outside of the El Camino Police Department’s jurisdiction. Read more.

The El Camino community needs to take advantage of on-campus life

With the reveal of 50% in-person classes at El Camino during the fall semester, more students, staff and faculty can have the ability to learn and work on campus in front of live people. Whenever my wife and I would talk about our future with kids, we always spoke about it in an eventful sense. But with the reason shooting in Texas that has left 19 children dead, we are reconsidering if it's ok to bring them into this violent world. Read more.

We see our special needs and disabled peers every day, but we may not even know them. Recently, I wanted to learn more about this specific community, meet them and see their worldview and the worldview of their family and loved ones. Read more.

12 more COVID-19 cases confirmed
12 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on June 1, bringing the total amount of positive COVID-19 cases for the month of May up to 60. These 12 cases come five days after the most recent COVID-19 update was sent by Marketing and Communications on May 27. Read more.

A Q&A with a Ukrainian war combat medic

Will Hogan, El Camino College alumni, recounts his experience of volunteering as a combat medic during his on-the-ground encounters in the warzone of the Russo-Ukrainian War. In 2019, the 20-year-old completed the Emergency Medical Technician program and some sign language communication courses before he left to join the U.S. Army. Read more.
Parenting students raise their children and their grades
