Students unaware fall classes may be in-person and officials need to find solutions to communication issues

The spring 2020 semester was quite something. It was surely filled with ups and downs for me personally but it’s been an emotional ride for many of us.
I know we sent out stories just last week to everyone but we wanted to end this semester on a high note, so below are more stories we published very recently. Everything from the in-depth accounts about how students at El Camino College are confused to The Union’s editorial board calling for administrators to be better at communicating, we wanted to leave you with important information because this is the last you’ll hear from us for a while.
Personally, this is my final semester at El Camino College and these past few weeks have been the last few moments I’ve gotten to experience as part of The Union’s staff. When I first joined this publication in the fall 2018 semester, I was ready to grow as a writer and journalist, but also as a human. The one thing I’ve been able to do over the last two years is become attached to the El Camino community. I’ve been able to report on and write about so many issues, topics and people. We’ve all been able to do that here at The Union.
So I wanted to thank you. Thank you for reading about your community. Thank you for emailing us your feedback. Thank you for letting us tell your stories. Thank you for letting us be a part of your lives. We appreciate all the responses we get from the El Camino community.
The Union will be back in the fall :)
Warm Regards,

Communication ‘inadequate at best’: students unaware in-person classes may return in fall
By Omar Rashad, Juan Miranda and Fernando Haro
El Camino College students are confused because many of them are unaware that administrators are hopeful to bring classes back to campus for the second half of the fall semester. But other than returning in the fall, there are a lot of unknowns students are dealing with, and they all stem from a lack of “quality” updates from administrators. Read more

We need clarity: administrators need to clear up confusion about the fall 2020 semester
By Editorial Board
The Union’s editorial board understands that nothing happens instantly and El Camino College is attempting to ensure that students and faculty will be as safe as possible—however, administrators need to be forthcoming with concrete details about plans for the fall 2020 semester so that students know what they’re getting themselves into. Quarantine for Fun and Profit
By Cameron Klassen
“Take a step into my apartment where my girlfriend and I have spent the past couple months. Our days have migrated from daily commutes to online for work and school. Despite the monotony of some aspects of quarantine, we’ve been eating good, creating art, opening our third eye, walking cats and making sure to get lots of sun.” Read more
A Mobile View of LA’s pandemic
“This photo gallery focuses on people around Los Angeles going on with their lives during a time of uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these shots were taken at a distance from my car. Despite global worries, the world moves on and the people in it adapt and move with it.” Read more
A Riverside family in quarantine
By Rosemary Montalvo
“This photo essay is a look into intimate moments shared with my family during the stay-at-home order due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Adjusting to a life in quarantine came with some stress for my family. We were unsure if my dad’s business would make it past the second month of the pandemic and we worried about contracting coronavirus anytime we went out because we did not want to risk the possibility of exposing my pregnant sister to the virus. But we dealt with the stress by keeping busy with home improvement projects and having lots of lotería nights.” Read more

A little bit about The Union
The Union is El Camino College’s student-run newspaper and the only local source of news for its college community. Everything published by The Union is done by student journalists. Whether it’s pulling an all-nighter to write human interest stories or push everything aside in order to deliver breaking news, our entire staff works incredibly hard to keep the El Camino community informed.
With the impacts of the coronavirus far-reaching, The Union has expanded its scope of coverage to include countless communities where El Camino College’s students, professors, employees and community members live. This includes more coverage on coronavirus and its impacts on cities including Gardena, Hawthorne, Torrance, Inglewood, Carson, Lawndale, Manhattan Beach, and Redondo Beach.
