Man charged with killing woman on campus attends third preliminary hearing
The man arrested and charged with murder for the sledgehammer attack of a woman on the El Camino College campus stood before a judge on Wednesday, May 15, at the Torrance Courthouse for another preliminary hearing. The hearing for Jeffery Davis, 40, who is charged with the killing of 65-year-old Junko Hanafusa, lasted about two minutes with Davis’ attorney doing most of the speaking on behalf of his client. Judge Thomas Sokolov set the next preliminary hearing for July 25. Read more.
El Camino cancels student commencement speech, student government objects

El Camino College canceled its student graduation speaker for its upcoming 2023-24 commencement, according to a statement from the Associated Students Organization. The statement, shared on the official Instagram account of the Associated Students Organization, highlighted ASO President Jose Merino’s “disappointment” with the decision to cancel the student speaker. El Camino to offer new video game production courses
New classes focusing on video game design and production will be available in the fall 2024 semester at El Camino College. Having been planned over a year and a half, “Games and Playable Media,” a career technical education program that will teach students the development and making of video games, has been added to the college’s curriculum. The class includes students making their own programs to play. Read more.
Student support program to continue despite low enrollment, budget cuts affecting El Camino
Despite low student enrollment and continuing budget issues at El Camino College, the meta-majors program will continue. The program helps students quickly earn their degrees by taking appropriate classes for their majors. Some adjustments have to be made to the program, including in-person counseling, in response to low enrollment. Read more.
El Camino students win top honors at community college research conference
Two students from El Camino College garnered top awards at an event showcasing the academic talent of community college honors scholars. El Camino students Afina Eull, 18, and Ibrahim Yaaseen, 19, both first-year students, received accolades for their research at the annual Honors Transfer Council of California conference. The conference featured over 50 honors programs from California community colleges. Each presenter was hand-selected by the HTCC conference submission committee. Read more.
An American pioneer: El Camino remembers former dean

Over 70 family, friends, colleagues and students gathered together to celebrate the life of El Camino College’s former Dean of Behavioral and Social Sciences Gloria E. Miranda. Over 10 speakers representing the many eras of Miranda’s life as a student, an instructor, a colleague, a mentor and as a beloved aunt came up to the pulpit to share their memories of her. Miranda was appointed as dean of behavioral and social sciences in 1996 and had served at El Camino for over 24 years before retiring in 2017. She passed away on March 4 at the age of 77. Read more.

Reporter Joshua Flores writes about how gross El Camino’s bathrooms are and the cesspool of germs in every toilet. Flores states that decency and cleanliness can go a long way for a cleaner bathroom. He says that El Camino still has a lot to do to make the bathrooms better. Read more.

‘Lost Girl’ takes audience on an adventure of hope, love, magic and growing up
“Lost Girl,” a play written by Kimberly Belflower, is a contemporary take on the classic story of Peter Pan, following the life of Wendy Darling after her adventure with Peter. “Lost Girl” debuted at the Campus Theatre on May 10 and performances will continue on May 17 and 19. Read more.

The Union spoke with Crystle Martin, dean of library and learning resources for the Schauerman Library at El Camino College, about the library’s resources. The Union also spoke with librarian Gary Medina and student Angel Tapia about the services the library provides. Some of the services include laptops that students can check out, rooms for practicing music, soldering stations, 3D printers and more.
Take a look at a rehearsal of the band Willowake in the garage of singer Junior Polanco in San Pedro. In the video, Willowake members and El Camino College students Dax Corcoran and Gavin Alvarado, together with lead singer Polanco, talk about what they did during the day, as well as some of the things they worked on throughout the rehearsal.
El Camino College auto technology students worked on older cars in their classes to enter in competition at the Los Angeles Auto Draft on May 8. Judges reviewed and scored the students’ work and the winners received up to $1,000 worth of prizes. Patti Fairchild, professor of auto collision, repair and painting, organized the first-ever auto draft event at El Camino.
