Man accused of killing woman on campus attends preliminary hearing

The man arrested for the Dec. 24, 2023 sledgehammer attack of a woman on campus faced the judge for the second time at the Torrance Municipal Court on Wednesday, March 6, for a preliminary hearing. Jeffery Davis, who is charged with murder in the killing of a 65-year-old Japanese woman, arrived in court in a blue prison jumpsuit with hands cuffed. The judge, Thomas Sokolov, set the next preliminary hearing for May 15. Read more.
Award-winning NFL reporter, former El Camino student dies at 72

Chris Mortensen, the journalist known for his NFL coverage spanning nearly four decades and former El Camino College student, died on Sunday, March 3. Some of his honors include the National Football League Players Association Georgetown Lombardi Award and the Dick McCann Award for his long and distinguished contributions to pro football. ASO to spend $25,000 on new utility vehicle

The Associated Students Organization approved a plan to spend $25,000 on a utility vehicle and its accessories. The ASO is planning to buy a Cushman Shuttle 4 Utility Vehicle which it will donate to the district but ASO will retain its “exclusive use.” The organization will pay the annual fee to the college for the vehicle’s usable life. Mirrored noncredit courses may help increase enrollment at El Camino

El Camino College students can sign up for free mirrored noncredit classes to receive an introduction to programs the college provides which could help increase enrollment. English professor Matthew Kline said during the March 5 Academic Senate meeting some benefits of taking mirrored noncredit courses include how the courses open up student opportunities and enrollment. Lack of players shuts down Women’s Basketball season

El Camino’s Women’s Basketball season was canceled due to injuries and not having enough players available after playing just seven games in the season. The Warriors had 18 games left scheduled for the rest of the season. Read more.
Mt. San Antonio men’s tennis overwhelms El Camino in conference win

Mt. San Antonio College dominated El Camino College 8-1 in the men’s tennis game on Feb. 29. Mt. SAC won eight straight after the Warriors won the first match, sending the Warriors on a three-game losing streak and an overall 1-8 on the season. Read more.
El Camino softball shuts out East Los Angeles in explosive 1st and 6th inning

El Camino College Women’s Softball team dominated East Los Angeles College in an 8-0 win, after an explosive five-run first inning. Warriors pitcher Gabriela Ortega pitched a shutout six innings, six hits allowed on no runs and three strikeouts on one walk allowed. Read more.

How to say ‘I’m sorry’: Workshop takes an empathetic look at relationships

Student Health Services kicked off a series of workshops about relationships on Feb. 26 with a workshop about the “5 Love Languages” and “5 Apology Languages.” During the workshop, clinical psychologist Victoria Kwon talked about her experiences with apologies and different ways to say “I’m sorry.” Read more.
