George Floyd protest outside Torrance City Hall, comics in class and sleep cycles during the pandemic
Free local news about your community delivered right to your inbox.
It feels like this country has reached a tipping point. I’ve seen more than enough viral videos about how the press has been treated by law enforcement while covering protests against police brutality and racism in this country. I know a few of the journalists who have been shot at with rubber bullets by police, walking away bleeding, bruised and with damaged camera equipment.
It’s a disappointment that in many cities we see a lack of care for those who make local news coverage robust and impactful. Yet journalists are keeping at it. No matter the medium, we are still going out and delivering reliable news. That’s inspiring to see as students and even more inspiring to see as fellow members of the press.
With the semester coming to an end very soon, I wanted to send you this form we’ve been having members of the El Camino community fill out. If you have a story that you’d like to open up about, whether it’s related to the coronavirus, your job or ongoing protests, let us know! Click below to fill out a form.
This week, we’ve got fewer stories than usual because we have something even bigger coming out next week in a special edition newsletter. Despite being a bimothly newsletter, we knew we had to end this semester on a high note so there’s more to come. Keep your eyes peeled for that! In the meantime, read about some recent updates on our site including coverage on a protest that happened right outside Torrance City Hall yesterday, sleep cycles during the pandemic and how one of our staffers is coping during this time. As always, holler if you have any questions or comments for me — me email is below :)
Warm Regards,

A little bit about The Union
The Union is El Camino College’s student-run newspaper and the only local source of news for its college community. Everything published by The Union is done by student journalists. Whether it’s pulling an all-nighter to write human interest stories or push everything aside in order to deliver breaking news, our entire staff works incredibly hard to keep the El Camino community informed.
With the impacts of the coronavirus far-reaching, The Union has expanded its scope of coverage to include countless communities where El Camino College’s students, professors, employees and community members live. This includes more coverage on coronavirus and its impacts on cities including Gardena, Hawthorne, Torrance, Inglewood, Carson, Lawndale, Manhattan Beach, and Redondo Beach.
