Gas prices soar to record highs in California

El Camino community members and local residents share their frustrations over California’s rise in gas prices. Compared to the national average of $4.164, the state of California has the highest gas prices on average in all of the United States, reaching record highs of just over $6 per gallon as recently as March 28. New learning modality aims for flexibility and increased student engagement

Increased flexibility in both online and in-person learning options for students through a new learning modality called "Hyflex" was introduced during the Tuesday, April 5 Academic Senate Meeting. Hyflex aims to simultaneously have both live Zoom meetings and in-person classes through upgraded technology, improving engagement for students. Read more.
Open forums held for final Vice President of Administrative Services candidates

El Camino College hosted an open forum via Zoom with the two final candidates for the Vice President of Administrative Services position on April 6. Candidates Daniel Villanueva and Robert Suppelsa answered questions on experience, college priorities and more to make their case on why they would be the best choice for the position. Read more.
El Camino’s journalism department wins 35 awards in national competitions

El Camino College’s student-run magazine and newspaper publications took home a total of 35 awards for their work over the past year. These awards were distributed over two national college conferences that took place in California and New York, hosted by the Associated Collegiate Press and the College Media Association. Read more.
Proposed academic calendar holidays put on hold during College Council Meeting
The El Camino College Council acknowledged the holidays of Juneteenth, Cesar Chavez Day and Indigenous Peoples Day in an agreement for the college’s academic calendar on April 4. The College Council decided to sign it off as a memorandum of understanding, acknowledging to all parties involved that action will be taken at a later date. Read more.

Men’s volleyball defeats L.A. Pierce in home conference matchup

El Camino College’s men’s volleyball team was able to defeat Los Angeles Pierce College 3-0 on Friday, April 1. With this home win, the Warriors are now on a nine-game win streak. Read more.
Warriors lose to Irvine City 18-3 in second matchup of the season

El Camino College’s Badminton team lost against Irvine City College 18-3, only gaining points from singles matches. Even with this loss, the players still have fun and grow from their experiences. Read more.
HEALTH
Suicide awareness traveling exhibition visits El Camino College

Hundreds of backpacks were scattered across El Camino College’s Library Lawn representing individuals who have either died from suicide or survived a suicide attempt. The ‘Send Silence Packing’ display aims to spread awareness about the impact of suicide affecting young adults across the country. Read more.

Woodworking class allows students to grow as creative individuals
The Construction Technology building is an area on campus that allows students to express their creativity through woodworking, creating and finishing limitless types of projects. When creating projects for class, students can purchase wood and other supplies to create their ideas. Read more.
Baseball field and staircases close due to commercial filming

The Baseball Field and exterior staircase of the North Gym were closed on April 5 and 6 due to commercial filming. With the CW show “All American” also filming on campus in early March, the El Camino College campus has recently been a favored location for filming during the spring 2022 semester. Read more.

Myriad literary journal extends submission deadline until after spring break

Myriad, El Camino College’s annually published Literary Arts Journal, has extended the deadline for submissions until Monday, April 18. Students can submit short stories, creative nonfiction, poetry, screenplays and artwork over spring break. Read more.

El Camino's construction technology classes give students the ability to creatively express themselves in their own projects. Students are able to create a variety of projects, from simple cutting boards to complex bowls. Watch here.

El Camino’s Cherry Blossom Festival returned after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, including poetry readings, a professional taiko drumming performance by a group called Mujo Dream Flight and a plaque dedication to late Academic Affairs Vice President Nadine Hata alongside Japanese snacks.
