El Camino College to slash $40 million from budget as it faces major deficit

El Camino College could start collecting parking fees from students in 2024 as part of its moneymaking strategy to address a possible bankruptcy. Other changes in student fees are on the table; a $24 per unit increase in non-resident tuition fees was already approved by the Board of Trustees in March. El Camino is facing a $20 million deficit for July 2023 to June 2025 and another $20 million from July 2025 to June 2026. Read more.
El Camino journalism program recognized with numerous national, statewide awards

El Camino College’s journalism program won multiple state and national awards from various college media organizations, including top honors for Best Newspaper and Best Magazine, in addition to numerous individual accolades. The Union and Warrior Life also amassed over 40 awards from nationally recognized student media organizations including the College Media Association, Journalism Association of Community Colleges and Society of Professional Journalists. Student organization releases statement in support of First Amendment, criticizes state colleges over protest response

The El Camino College Associated Students Organization announced support for the First Amendment in a statement regarding the protests on college campuses across the U.S. The ASO also criticized the California higher education system’s role in the protests. Read more.
Campus vending machines not working, students say
Some of the vending machines on El Camino College have been malfunctioning, resulting in some students going out of their way to avoid some vending machines. The Union started checking the vending machines on Feb. 21 and found some of the machines are still malfunctioning as of May 2. The broken machines are causing students to spend more than they should because the ones they buy don’t get dispensed. Read more.
Indecent exposure, vandalism reported on campus
The El Camino College Police Department received reports of indecent exposure and vandalism on campus since the last Police Beat update on April 29. Read more.

Los Angeles Sparks return to El Camino for training camp
For the second year in a row, the Los Angeles Sparks have returned to El Camino College to hold their training camp before the 2024 WNBA season. The Sparks had the team’s official media day on Wednesday, May 1 in the ECC Gymnasium, where the Sparks will hold their three-week training camp. Read more.
El Camino Softball shuts out Moorpark in Game 1 of 3C2A SoCal Regionals

The Warriors Softball team swept the Moorpark raiders in the first round of the 3C2A SCC Regionals. In Game 1, The Warriors shut out the Raiders in a dominant 3-0 win on Friday, May 3. In Game 2, the Warriors beat the Raiders again 10-1 on May 4 to advance to the 3C2A Southern California Super Regionals starting on May 10 against Mt. SAC. Read more.
Santa Ana cuts Warriors baseball playoff run short in season-ending loss

The Santa Ana Dons dominated the Warriors in Game 2 of the series 17-7 to sweep, advance and kick the Warriors out of playoff contention in the two teams’ matchup on May 4. The Warriors lost the previous game to the Dons 6-1 on May 3, leading to the two-game sweep. The Warriors finished the season an even 21-21. Read more.
