Letter From The Editor
Leaving Las Vegas
And, we’re back! For those of you not in the know, members of both The Union and Warrior Life staff spent the majority of this past week in Las Vegas.
13 of our student editors and reporters trekked across California and into Nevada in a four-car, convoy road trip all to attend the 2023 Society of Professional Journalists convention.
Some might raise their eyebrows at the thought of college students taking a trip to the so-called Sin City.
But please, rest assured readers that these conventions are part of a long tradition or educationally valuable conferences. At these conferences, El Camino student journalists get to learn firsthand from fellow student and professional journalists from across the country.
My first experience with such trips in 2022 (to New York to attend the College Media Association Conference) was genuinely life-changing.
Beyond the practical knowledge to be gained from sessions as varied as headline writing boot camps, discussions on how to cover mass shootings and updates on the latest AP Style changes, some of the most value that comes from these trips is the excitement it generates in a young journalist.
This particular conference trip was a first for many of our staffers and it was genuinely a privilege to see their excitement for the medium grow and they learned more skills and met some amazing people.
What I’ll remember from this trip is how our young copy editor Nasai Rivas found inspiration during an AP Style session. Returning reporter Joshua Flores got a chance to meet one of his journalism idols, Inside Edition's Lisa Guererro. Maddie Selack, The Union’s own Twitter and Tik-Tok editor, managed to teach Lisa Guerrero a little about Tik-Tok while learning more about the platform herself.
While we find time to have some fun on these trips there is real value in the knowledge and inspiration they bring to students and that is always worth investing in.
